Many months ago I defended my dissertation about “Peace journalism and its news values in Iran” The news Coverage of Coalition to Iraq by Six Iranian Widely Circulated Dailies (Kayhan, Resalat, Hamshahri, Ettelaat, Etemaad, Yaseno).

This is summary of my thesis:

This research pays to explain "peace journalism" which is regarded as new concept in worldwide journalism literature. The main goal of this research will help to make clear and promote the level of theoretical literature of peace journalism.

To this end, I tried to define parameter and values of this kind of journalism; and then to evaluate the level of using these standards by six large circulation newspapers during war between coalition force and Iraq militaries.

The research is based on the Galtung theory and four main approaches of peace journalism (Solution oriented approach, Process oriented approach, Truth oriented approach, People oriented approach) and add two key principles in journalism; one, professional and other, moral principles.

The researcher assumes that interaction between those four approaches and the two principles could lead to sustainable peace for news papers.

After figuring out and explaining the values and approaches of peace journalism by content analysis, the survey showed that amount of from approaches of peace journalism in the survey have been too low even though the news papers the media have more attention to people oriented approach in comparison with other approaches.

It seems that the usage of the people oriented during Iraq war was originated from cultural proximity between Iran and Iraq. In other word, repercussion of Iraqi people innocence in six daily papers just limited to war and there have been less effort for making clear the dimension of the war.

These newspapers have no correspondent in Iraq for coverage and it seems that it's one of the reasons that they publish less descriptive report and instead analytic and investigative reports, they preferred to covering of hard news about clashes between coalition forces and Iraq militaries.
